What is TriCombo?

A glucosamine and chondroitin injection for knee comfort and movement

Knee pain can gradually change the way you live: shorter walks, slower stairs, fewer outings and more thought before every activity. Bioport TriCombo is a glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid injection given directly into the knee joint. It is designed for the symptomatic treatment of knee osteoarthritis, with all three ingredients supplied in one pre-filled syringe.

Most people have heard of glucosamine and chondroitin as tablets. TriCombo brings glucosamine into the knee by injection, alongside chondroitin and hyaluronic acid. Products labelled glucosamine differ in composition and route, so it is worth checking exactly what is being offered.

As far as we are aware, TriCombo is the first glucosamine injection given directly into the knee joint to be offered in the UK.

Inside the formulation

A closer look at the three components

Each ingredient has a role. Together they underpin Bioport’s approach to joint lubrication and cartilage support, with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate alongside hyaluronic acid.

01

Glucosamine

N-acetylglucosamine (NAG)

The form of glucosamine used in TriCombo, an amino sugar included for its relationship to the molecules that form cartilage and joint fluid. Here it is delivered by injection into the knee rather than taken as a tablet.

02

Chondroitin sulfate

Chondroitin sodium sulfate

A glycosaminoglycan (GAG), one of the long sugar chains that give joint fluid and cartilage their structure. Combined with hyaluronate, it forms the physically associated polymer network described by Bioport.

Hyaluronic acid

Sodium hyaluronate

Also a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and the lubricating component of the formulation, intended to support the mechanical environment of the knee.

Why an injection rather than a tablet

Taken as a tablet, glucosamine and chondroitin have to survive digestion and reach the joint through the bloodstream. TriCombo places all three ingredients inside the knee in one pre-filled syringe.

The smooth movement of a knee also depends on the fluid inside the joint, which helps the cartilage surfaces move against one another. TriCombo is intended to supplement that environment as part of a plan to manage osteoarthritis symptoms. For you, the meaningful measures are everyday ones: how comfortably you walk, how you manage stairs and how readily you get moving after sitting.

Glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid in one syringe

The glucosamine in TriCombo is N-acetylglucosamine (NAG). Chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid are both glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), the long sugar chains that give joint fluid and cartilage their structure.

Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are included for their relationship to cartilage biology and the joint’s surrounding matrix. Hyaluronic acid is the lubricating component, familiar from other viscosupplement injections. The manufacturer’s brochure presents the three together as a combined approach to joint lubrication and cartilage support, and the evidence page looks at the science in more detail.

What makes physical cross-linking different?

A gel’s behaviour depends on both its ingredients and the way its molecules interact. Bioport describes a physically associated network between hyaluronate and chondroitin sulfate, rather than a formulation cross-linked through chemical treatment or irradiation. This is a central feature of the product design.

In everyday language, the ingredients help form the structure of the solution together. The manufacturer’s rationale is to support stability and resistance to breakdown while retaining the properties needed for use inside a joint. That explains the design choice; the response in your own knee is assessed through symptoms, activity and follow-up.

One injection, with a plan for what follows

TriCombo is supplied in a pre-filled syringe for a single injection into the joint. This format is relevant if you want to explore an injection option without assuming that treatment must involve a course of repeated weekly appointments. Your assessment and follow-up remain important parts of the process.

Before treatment, agree the target knee, the technique, the aftercare and the activities you want to improve. Afterwards, use those goals to review progress. A useful plan connects the procedure with rehabilitation and your return to normal activity, rather than ending when the injection has been given.

  1. 1Assess your knee
  2. 2Agree the treatment
  3. 3Review your progress

Where TriCombo fits among knee treatments

Patients often reach the point of exploring injections after trying exercise, physiotherapy or other symptom-management measures. Some are looking for additional support with everyday activity; others want a clearer understanding of the non-surgical options before considering an operation.

An assessment at London Cartilage Clinic can bring those questions together. TriCombo, Arthrosamid, ChondroFiller and Mytocel have different compositions and treatment purposes. Your diagnosis, the pattern of cartilage damage, previous treatment and personal priorities help shape the discussion. Explore the comparison guide to see those approaches side by side.

Take the next step at London Cartilage Clinic

Start with a discovery call to discuss the assessment pathway, or arrange a consultation to review your knee in detail. Bring your previous imaging and a short account of the treatments you have tried, including what helped and for how long.

The most useful starting point is the activity you want back: a comfortable commute, walking the dog, travelling or being more active with your family. The team can discuss TriCombo availability and explain the proposed plan, and you can ask the team for a written quotation.

Your TriCombo questions, answered

What is Bioport TriCombo used for?

The manufacturer describes it as a joint-fluid supplement for symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. At London Cartilage Clinic, its role is considered alongside your symptoms, examination, imaging and treatment goals.

Is TriCombo a steroid?

No. Its formulation combines glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid. It is a different approach from a corticosteroid injection.

Is it a single injection?

The product is presented as a single-injection treatment in a pre-filled syringe. Assessment, aftercare and review are planned separately around your needs.

Is this the same as glucosamine tablets?

The ingredients will be familiar, but a tablet and an injection are different routes. A tablet is swallowed, whereas TriCombo is given into the knee itself.

Can I have it if I have already tried another injection?

Previous treatment is part of the assessment. Tell the clinician which product you received, when it was given and how your knee responded, so the next step can be planned appropriately.

How much does TriCombo cost at London Cartilage Clinic?

The fee is confirmed in writing at your consultation.

What does cartilage support mean?

It describes the manufacturer’s rationale for the formulation and its ingredients. The practical treatment goal is better knee comfort and function; an individual result or cartilage regrowth cannot be guaranteed.
